TITLE/DESCRIPTION: Understanding Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Work
Misinformation and myths have led many to believe that they can only work a certain number of hours or earn a specific amount each month or the SSI cash benefit and Medicaid will be terminated. The SSI program is designed so that the cash benefit gradually reduces when someone goes to work, but Medicaid is retained until a living wage is reached.
Our speakers are Sara Kendall and Nehtra Davis from Texas Workforce Commission - Vocational Rehabilitation Division. In this webinar, we will review the basic SSI rules around working and the SSI “work incentives” that can increase the amount of cash benefit a person receives when working. We will explain how someone, even those who receive a Home and Community-Based Services Waiver, can remain an active SSI recipient and continue to receive free Medicaid while earning a living wage. You’ll learn where to get free assistance so you can better understand what happens to the SSI benefit and Medicaid when your child is actively looking for work, or is already working.
